On this day, which has all the outward appearances of any other day, Willy must come to terms with his employees, his rebellious daughter, and his frigid but beautiful wife. While this work stands by itself as a wonderful first novel from a young author it also takes its place as a part of Swift's world -- a place where there is a great deal of unease and many troublesome occurrences.
A first-person internal narrative, the book starts in the early morning and follows all of the day's events straight through.
While the day happens in chronological order, the tale is frequently interrupted by flashbacks and remembrances of a difficult past. At several points the text steps away from Willy and assumes the voice of his dead wife Irene.
